The world recently crossed one billion smartphone owners. And for Muslims as well, there are some good reasons why an iPhone for instance or any other smartphone can be a very good companion.
Thanks to skilled muslim geeks and programmers from our Ummah that spent some of their valuable time coding brilliant islamic apps.
Below, are some very useful things muslims can do using various apps…ranging from finding qibla direction to tracking and monitoring of your performance in islamic activities… check this out!
Find qibla direction anytime and anywhere
Well this one was the first thing we could find extremely useful when accelerometers were introduced into mobile phones. By knowing the relative position of makkah one could easily find the right direction using either the built-in compass application or a dedicated app that looks up based on your position the exact direction to follow. Plenty of apps are available, mostly following the same approach (a digital compass displaying quibla direction based on your gps location) however we recently could find applications that are instead representing the kaaba’s direction in augmented reality, which is actually quite nice and geeky.
Read Quran everywhere
The overal reading experience dramatically improved over the last few years with the introduction of various technologies (retina screens, super amoled HD…etc). Also, the increase in screen sizes and resolutions we’ve seen lately are making it more and more confortable to read Quran on smartphones or tablets.
Indeed nowadays you could find the various applications that serves the purpose very well, either bundled into apps such as Quran reader or iQuraan available for both iphone and android , or as pdf files available for your readings.
Listen to 60 hizb of quran from almost every recitation and qaari
The list of applications you could include into this section is huge, and it’s a matter of individual preference. Our one when it comes to pure listening to quran, goes to Quraan voice. It is very well implemented, includes a huge list of recitations, integrates well with a bluetooth synced device (this is what we use in the car, you’ll need to be equiped properly with bluetooth capable audio devices) and best of all it’s totally free!
Check out prayer times while travelling
The further you go from your hometown the more shifts are important in terms of prayer times. You can also tackle this with your smartphone as you might probably know. You can get prayer time simply by accessing your local masjid’s website with your mobile or via specialized apps. And for this you again have more than one choice, but for the sake of illustration, we will mention for instance ipray and guidance for iphone and Prayer times for android.
Find the closest masjid
Gone is the time you were travelling to cities with no clue where to pray, now you can pretty much always plan ahead or on the spot using your smart device, loaded of great islamic stuff. Indeed there are plenty of applications or web applications that allow you to locate the closest mosque, masjid and prayer rooms. We will mention mosque finder for android and mosques finder for iPhone.
Grow your knowledge about islam with mobile applications
We wrote a while ago already, a few articles on islamic mobile applications for arabic speakers and others for english ones, that presented a selection of free applications for iphone that could serve as good islamic readings. These would include many of the most common resources in islamic publications: like Anawawi hadiths collection, stories in the Quran, stories of the prophets…etc.
Prepare for Haj
As mentioned in a previous post, there are plenty of dedicated applications about haj, many could serve as reminders on the spot to what needs to be said as prayers and when. Read this post to get a selection of applications for iphone dedicated to hajj and umrah.
Check food composition for non Halal ingredients
Track your performance in doing good deeds
This section is rather inspired from a unique app, that we really appreciate as muslim geeks. Qamar deen is as beautifully done as it is useful for our daily muslim lives. Once installed, this free app allows you to track and visualize your timeliness in performing salat, with or without jama’ah. It also Records your Quraan reading activities as well as fasting and help you monitor how you are doing. This islamic app was first released for IOS (iPhone) and is now also available for Android.
And the list goes on…
You will concede that it’s an interesting list of things, that less then a decade earlier, was much harder to achieve! But beware of the fact that, your phone can also be a bad companion… checkout our other next post to know why…
